Vowel Patterns of English has 40 units sequenced to lead students from sound to print in their journey toward fluency in speaking and reading English.  A metaphorical guide, Sam the Cat, guides the learner and leader through the foundational sounds of English.  Each unit only takes about 10 minutes to navigate a hierarchy of cognitive abilities in increasingly difficult tasks through the five steps leading to phonemic awareness development.  It is easily used by the teacher or parent facilitating the learning process and enjoyed by students.  Vowel Patterns of English curriculum equips students with the ability to say the sounds and recognize them so that they will be prepared to read and write those sounds.

The drills should be used with Vowel Patterns of English Cards provided by New Directions for A2.  This Phonics Course has a corresponding Reading Textbook called Firefly and the Vowel Code which helps students visualize and read the Vowel Patterns of English in stories.  This help students take the sounds they learned and apply them to common reading scenarios.

Vowel Patterns of English is the second of three levels of reading development.  The first is Sounds of English which introduced short vowel sounds, consonant sounds, and consonant blends.  This level, Vowel Patterns of English, introduces long vowel sounds and other vowel sounds.  The third level, Building Blocks of English, introduces students to all multisyllabic words, prefixes, suffixes, and common English word roots.
